There’s no doubt that the United States continues to suffer through an obesity epidemic. And there’s little doubt bad health habits begin as early as childhood.

But there’s an encouraging study that shows that if you can make it to midlife without high blood pressure, diabetes, or other cardiovascular risk factors (high cholesterol/smoking), you have a much better chance of reaching age 80 without the life-threatening conditions of heart attack or stroke.

HealthDay reporter Steven Reinberg writes an article that shows that, in a recent American Heart Association report,  over two-thirds of U.S. adults and about a third of children are over the ideal body weight.

No doubt obesity puts a strain on the heart. As Reinberg points out, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for U.S. adults.

It’s never too early for a New Year’s resolution.
