OK, confession time. When you drop by the shopping mall, do you park just steps away from the department store? Do you take the elevator one floor up, even if  a staircase is a couple of feet away? If you’re an older baby boomer (age 65 and up), you might re-think your habits.

Randy Dotinga, a reporter with HealthDay, takes a look at a study that suggests walking speed is directly related to survival. The article describes efforts by University of Pittsburgh geriatrics specialist Dr. Stephanie Anne Studenski to see if there is a relationship between brisk walking and a longer life.

The new analysis, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, may prompt you to invest in some good sneakers and start picking up your walking pace. Hey, it’s a good New Year’s Resolution, anyway.
